چکیده

THE text-book description of the anatomy of the upper eyelid with particular reference to the septum orbitale (palpebral fascia) and especially the insertion of the levator muscle is unnecessarily vague or complicated from the surgical point of view. Thus the septum orbitale is described by some authors as arising from the orbital margin and ending where it blends with the aponeurosis of the levator. Most, however, describe it as extending almost to the lower edge of the tarsal plate with which it blends. It has also been noted as having an attachment to the upper border of the tarsal plate. The insertion of the levator is described as splitting into three laminae which have the following attachments: (1) Skin. (2a) Lower part of anterior surface of tarsal plate. (2b) Osseous.

A Cadaveric Anatomical Study of the Levator Aponeurosis and Whitnall's Ligament

PURPOSE To identify the anatomy of the levator aponeurosis (LA) and Whitnall's ligament (WL) in Korean subjects using cadavers. METHODS Orbital exenteration was performed in ten cadavers (20 eyeballs) that had no history of trauma near the eyeball. We observed characteristics of WL (tension, density, and shape) and the relationship between the superior rectus muscle (SR) and the levator palpe...

Muscle spindles in the levator palpebrae superioris muscle of human foetuses.

Studies were performed on the levator palpebrae superioris muscle, isolated from foetuses aged 17 to 30 weeks. The number of muscle spindles varied from 2 in the 17th week to 7 in the 30th week. The length of the muscle spindles ranged from 20 to 500 microm, and the diameter varied from 10 to 70 microm. These observations show that the number of muscle spindles in levator palpebrae superioris m...

Accidental lacrimal gland removal during resection of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle.

Accidental removal of the lacrimal gland is a rare complication of ptosis surgery. We report two children who underwent large unilateral levator palpebrae superioris resections (LPSr). After surgery, both patients developed dry eye. Post-operatively, the parents of both patients noticed no tears in the affected eye when their child cried. Computed tomography proved the absence of the lacrimal g...

Histological appearances of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle in the Marcus Gunn phenomenon.

The levator palpebrae superioris muscles from 12 cases of Marcus Gunn phenomenon were examined histologically by means of histochemistry and morphometry. The appearances were of a neurogenic atrophy with pathological changes occurring in both the affected side and the clinically normal side, suggesting that the causative lesion was located in the central nervous system.

Aponeurosis of the levator palpebrae superioris in Chinese subjects

An accurate understanding of the anatomy of the levator palpebrae superioris aponeurosis (LPSA) is critical for successful blepharoplasty of aponeurotic ptosis. We investigated the macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the LPSA.This prospective live gross anatomy study enrolled 200 adult Chinese patients with bilateral mild ptosis undergoing elective blepharoplasty. Full-thick eyelid tissues a...
